In 2018 The Great Smoky Mountains National Park welcomed over 11 million visitors, many of which arrived with dreams of experiencing one of America’s most loved footpaths, The Appalachian Trail. At The Appy Lodge, we love all of the trails in the park, but we are a bit bias when it comes to the 71 miles of the AT that pass over the ridges of the Smokies. You see, the entire reason that we were created was to pay homage to the Appalachian Trail, all of the people throughout history that made the trail possible and to the Appalachian mountains. If you’re heading to the Smoky Mountains this year, we would love to share the story of the Appalachian Trail with you by having you as our guest. Here are a few reasons why a stay with us should be included in your AT adventure!

Our Hotel Was Created to Share the Story of the Appalachian Trail

breakfast area in the appy lodgeOur hotel was created to pay homage to not only the Appalachian Trail but to the dreamers that worked to make the trail a reality. While staying with us, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history of the trail, the different sections that you would experience on a thru hike and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Appalachians. Our hallways our filled with photographs from the trail, local paintings based on the AT and even handmade trail sign replicas by a thru-hiker. Each of our guest rooms is named after a shelter that you would experience along the trail. In our lobby, you’ll find books, information and Appalachian Trail inspired gifts as well.

Our Location is Perfect for a Day Hike on the AT

Our hotel is located in Gatlinburg, TN and just 30 minutes away from the Newfound Gap section of the trail. Just up the road, you’ll also find Clingmans Dome, the highest point on the entire Appalachian Trail. By staying with us, you can get a great night of sleep, enjoy a free breakfast and then hop on the trail for a day of exploring. Newfound Gap gives you access to one of the best day hikes on the AT, Charlies Bunion. The 8 mile round-trip hike to Charlies will give you a great taste of the trail, allow you to check out the Icewater Spring Shelter and of course take in the stunning views from the bunion itself. You can also enjoy a day on the AT between Newfound Gap and Charlies Bunion or plan a hike going north or south along the trail. If you’re needing to resupply or pick up last minute items, you’ll find the NOC Gatlinburg just before you enter the national park. Are you new to hiking or not comfortable hiking alone? The NOC can also help to set you up with a guided hike through a local guide company.
